Pond algae are not all the same. By identifying the type of algae, you can choose the right approach. Floating algae turns water green, string algae forms long strands, and brown algae creates a brown deposit. Each type requires a different solution.

Why Identifying Algae Matters

Not all algae are harmful, but some species can quickly take over. Knowing which type of algae you have allows you to apply the right solution. Taking the wrong approach wastes time and money without producing results.

The three most common types of pond algae are blanketweed, green water algae, and diatoms. In addition, sludge algae, blue-green algae blooms, and various rarer species occur sporadically. Each type has its own characteristics and causes.

Blanketweed

Blanketweed forms long green strands attached to rocks, plants, or the pond bottom. These filaments can reach several metres in length and often float to the surface. Common species include Cladophora and Spirogyra. Blanketweed grows mainly in spring, when nutrients are abundant and competition from aquatic plants is still limited.

Characteristics: Long green strands with a silky texture, feels slippery to the touch, easy to remove by hand. With Spirogyra, a spiral structure is often visible under magnification.

Solutions for blanketweed

Remove blanketweed regularly by hand using a pond net or blanketweed brush. Prevent regrowth by adding enough aquatic plants to absorb excess nutrients. Ensure proper filtration and reduce fish feeding. UV-C does not work against blanketweed because it is attached to surfaces. Consider pond treatments to restore your pond's balance in case of persistent problems.

Tip: Remove blanketweed preferably in early spring before it grows en masse. This saves a lot of work later in the season.

Green Water Algae

Green water algae are microscopic, single-celled organisms floating freely in the water. Common species include Chlorella and Scenedesmus. The water turns cloudy green, resembling pea soup. In strong sunlight and high nutrient levels, green water algae multiply rapidly. This type of algae causes no structural damage, but restricts visibility and can drop oxygen levels at night.

Characteristics: Green water with no visible structure, cannot be grasped, water feels slippery between fingers. Extreme blooms may produce surface foam.

Solutions for green water algae

A UV-C clarifier is the most effective solution against green water algae. UV light breaks down the cell structure as water passes through the unit. Ensure adequate capacity: at least 2 watts per 1,000 litres of pond water. Replace the lamp after 8,000 operating hours, even if it still lights up. Support the process with plenty of oxygen, aquatic plants, and regular partial water changes.

Please note: UV-C only works if all pond water flows through the system regularly. A pump that is too weak significantly reduces effectiveness.

Diatoms

Diatoms are single-celled algae with a hard silicate shell. They form a brown, slippery coating on rocks, liner, and plants. Diatoms are especially active in early spring when silicates are present and other algae offer little competition. After a few weeks, they usually disappear on their own as silicates are depleted and aquatic plants become active.

Characteristics: Brown to ochre-coloured coating, smooth and slippery, easy to wipe away but quickly returns. Usually a temporary issue lasting a few weeks.

Solutions for diatoms

Diatoms usually disappear on their own after early spring. Remove them mechanically with a pond vacuum or sponge for aesthetic reasons. Prevent new silicate input by avoiding tap water during water changes. Add extra oxygenating plants to absorb nutrients faster. Do not use algaecides, as this disrupts the biological recovery of the pond.

Tip: Patience is often the best approach for diatoms. As soon as aquatic plants start growing and silicates run out, the problem resolves itself.

Less Common Algae Types

  • Blue-green algae (Cyanobacteria): Blue-green discoloration with an oily film on the water surface. Toxic to humans and animals. Occurs at high temperatures and elevated nutrient levels. Avoid contact immediately if suspected.
  • Slime algae / biofilm: Smooth, slippery biofilm on liner and rocks. A mix of bacteria and algae. Remove mechanically and improve water circulation.
  • Spot algae / film algae: Small green spots or a thin film on glass and hard surfaces. Harmless but unsightly. Remove using a scraper or sponge.
  • Beard algae / black brush algae: Dark grey to black tufts. Rare in ponds, more common in aquariums. Stubborn and difficult to remove.
  • Euglenoids (Euglena): Red-brown to dark green floating mass. Indicates heavy organic pollution. Improve filtration and reduce feeding.
  • Dinoflagellates: Yellow-brown dust-like algae. Very rare in ponds. Occurs under extreme conditions.
  • Rope algae: Coarser green strands, thicker than standard blanketweed. Less common. Treat like blanketweed: remove manually and limit nutrients.

Warning: Blue-green algae blooms are toxic. Avoid skin and eye contact. Keep pets away. If in doubt, take a water sample to a specialised laboratory.

General Prevention

Regardless of the algae type, prevention is always better than treatment. Plant at least half of the pond surface area with oxygenating plants. Feed fish sparingly and remove uneaten food within five minutes. Provide adequate shade using floating or marginal plants. Clean filters regularly and prevent falling leaves from entering the pond in autumn.
